What is the difference between a balcony and a loggia?

Quite often we hear talk about repairs, in which people talk about balconies or loggias. What is the difference between a balcony and a loggia? How to be literate in such a conversation?

Balcony

Balcony in construction called protruding from the surface of the wall enclosed site. This site can be glazed on all sides, or can be fenced only from the bottom. The balcony has no side walls.

Loggia

Loggia is called built-in or attached to the plane of the wall area, which is fenced with walls on three or two sides (depending on the location in the building). The loggia can also be glazed.

As you can see, the fundamental difference is whether the site is a separate element in a building, or is it built into its walls, i.e. forms a niche in the wall.

This question is important when redeveloping the apartment. For example, in some cases the loggia can be combined with a room to expand the space. But the balcony is impossible.
